How To Get The Best Results From Insect Repellent Bands
Insect repellent bands are an alternative to the sprays and lotions which put the active ingredient directly onto the skin, and this can be very useful to people who suffer from sensitive skin, sunburn, or allergies. The best of these insect repellent bands use the most potent of all active ingredients which are used in insect repellents, DEET. Unlike DEET based solutions which come in the form of lotions or creams, these bands only touch the skin in one specific spot. The idea is that the insects are repelled by the odor of the chemicals without the need for application to the skin.
So, are these insect repellent bands right for you? Well, the first point of consideration is whether you want to use a chemical, synthetic based solution or a natural one. Natural solutions are inherently less potent, and so they are best applied directly to the skin. Because they are using no harsh chemicals, there is very rarely a problem with this. As with a great many food products, there will always be a small minority who will react to this type of natural repellents, but these are few and far between.
The big disadvantage of natural repellents is that they need to be consistently re-applied, as they do not have the ability to stay potent over time that a chemical such as DEET has. DEET will remain effective for over twice as long as a natural plant based solution. To make DEET even safer to use, you can get hold of a solution created by the US military which uses a plastic polymer to ensure that the DEET is distributed over time, lessening the need for both the chemical itself and the reapplication of it.
These considerations do not apply, of course, if you have chosen to use insect repellent bands. These will retain their effectiveness for around a hundred hours, so make sure that you have enough of them available to satisfy your needs. The disadvantage of having something which will last for this length of time is that it must be potent, and there are potential side effects of using DEET over time. These are mental rather than physical, such as disturbed sleep patterns and impaired concentration.
Insect repellent bands need to be used in conjunction with other protective materials if they are to be effective. Even with the giving off of an odor which will repel insects, there is still only a certain area of the skin which is protected. Beyond this point, you will be vulnerable unless you use other solutions. The most obvious of these is clothing treated with Permethrin. This will reinforce the effect of the protective bands, creating complete protection if there is no gap between the clothing and the area covered by the insect repellent bands.
