Finding A DEET Free Insect Repellent Which Will Still Be Effective
DEET free insect repellent will not be as powerful as any which do contain DEET, but that is no reason why they cannot be powerful enough in most circumstances. There are many alternatives, including ones made purely from natural plant based sources, which can confer an exceptionally high degree of protection. Of course, there is also the consideration that your insect repellent should only be one small part of your overall strategy for reducing the risk of insect bites to the lowest possible level.
Exactly what form this strategy should take depends on the objective you need to achieve. Taking the elaborate precautions you need to take in mosquito infested areas when you are in a normal summer situation will be overkill, and you would not be likely to maintain this schedule for long. By the same token, if you are going into a mosquito infested area, you would be very foolish to just use a standard insect repellent and trust to luck. For the highest danger situation, it is not recommended that you consider a DEET free insect repellent at all, unless your skin has a reaction to DEET.
A safe insect repellent needs to be considered from both sides of the equation. If you are combating mosquito bites, then anything which still leaves you at risk is not a safe insect repellent. If, however, your needs are not so extreme, you can begin to consider why you would want to substitute another material for DEET. Actually, DEET is one of the least risky chemicals you will find in products which need to be this effective. Statistics show that only a minuscule percentage of people suffer any skin reaction when using DEET.
Where DEET does have a problem is with prolonged use, when there is clear evidence that persistent users will suffer a loss of mental clarity, which can lead to sleep disturbance and an impaired work performance. Clearly, there is an effect on the chemical balance of the human brain, which gives a valid reason for searching for alternatives. Picaridin insect repellent is one such alternative, and is also proven to be effective. It does not have the strength of DEET, but it will work in most situations.
If you are really looking for a safe insect repellent, and you are prepared to apply it more frequently, then a natural plant based solution is also worth considering. There are several which have been proven to be effective, but the best one is lemon eucalyptus. This is effective even against mosquito bites, and can be used in the harshest of conditions. So long as you are not in the very small minority of people who suffer a reaction from this product, it will prove to be your most effective DEET free insect repellent.
