Should You Select An All Natural Bug Repellent Or A Chemical Based Product?

Natural bug repellent is proving itself to be an authentic and serious substitute for the more traditional chemical based products such as DEET and Picaridin. These natural repellents are somewhat controversial, as is their handling by some governments around the world. In Europe, for instance, these products are prohibited from sale as bug repellents, even though there is clear proof that they do function in this role. They don't have the concentrated strength of the chemical bug repellent products, and they need to be applied more often, nevertheless they do work.

There aren't any such constraints on the sale of chemical based items, indicating that the European government considers these to be completely risk-free, and that the claims of natural bug repellent makers are false. This is simply not true, as there is ample evidence to suggest harmful effects of chemical based solutions, and also evidence that natural products work as bug repellents. A study of the facts and the evidence is strongly recommended before you make your final purchasing choice.

When evaluating the possible dangerous effects of chemical based bug repellents, it does need to be kept in mind that the occurrence of serious problems with their use is extremely small. DEET, for example, is used by millions of people throughout the summer months, and only four deaths have occurred which have been attributed to its use. Seizures and other direct negative consequences are so rare that the substance can be considered safer than many allergy-related food products.

The real problems with DEET, as well as other chemicals result from extented exposure, are more intangible than a direct causation of illness. Tests which have been carried out on workers at National Park facilities over a length of time prove that there is a negative effect of prolonged use. Workers who are exposed to DEET every day have slower reaction times, less mental clarity, and increased disturbance of sleep patterns. The hazards of chemical based bug repellents can no longer be ignored, and it is imperative now that we begin to research natural bug repellent products from an objective viewpoint, instead of assuming that everything which is not chemical is automatically impotent.

Natural products such as citronella oil have been used as bug repellents for many years, but still, governments have now decided to ban their sale as such. This is without any kind of proof to suggest that they don't have the stated properties. Actually, the data strongly suggests that these substances can and do repel bugs. They're much less harmful to use, although a certain number of people do encounter skin discomfort with many natural products. It really is a case of trying several to determine what you're compatible with and always bearing in mind the need to apply natural alternatives more often. Do this, and there's no reason why you can't successfully use a natural bug repellent.
